The main objective of PORPLANTSURF is to produce high-performance superhydrophobic films inspired by the surfaces of leaves and petals from plants in northern Portugal, particularly in the Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Douro Litoral and Minho provinces. These biomimetic materials will exhibit a range of significant commercial effects, such as 'self-cleaning', 'anti-icing', 'anti-fogging', 'anti-fouling' and 'anti-drag'. They will have a huge technological impact as smart coatings in the automotive, aeronautical, aerospace and naval industries, resulting in safer transport, lower fuel consumption, greater range, greater strength and higher speeds. They will also be used in the paint industry to keep building façades clean and aesthetically pleasing.
